Social Landscapes - explorations of everyday
As part of a global perspective on urban development the studio has been working with issues relating to privatisation, homogenisation and gentrification. This has been done through a focus on local identity, public activity and social aspects of urban life.

In Studio 3 we have been focusing on the notions of public space, local identity and community. The site of investigation this year has been the local context of Ålidhem, a residential area south of the University in Umeå. The area was almost completely built during the late 60s and early 70s as part of a governmental programme called the “million program” with the aim to drastically increase the
available about of housing in the country over a ten year period.

The studio has been taking part in local activities and actions and the students have been encouraged to investigate existing networks of local organisations and actors to develop the framework for their projects. The work has resulted in strategies for development of the area with an aim to strengthen the local community. The methodology has allowed students to work with real existing issues that also have a potential to grow outside the context of the course.

The work is understood as an ongoing investigation, in progress, that tries to build a collective vision for a new Cultural Map for Ålidhem. The course explores and introduces a pedagogic experience in the context of the global housing crisis, the massive state plans, and the changes of use of the territory enrolled in the Million Programme.
